Smacked Up! WWE SmackDown Review for 11/5/10

Welcome to this week’s edition of Smacked Up! With the last edition of the Saw movie franchise debuting in theaters last week it got me thinking. Which WWE Superstar would you most like to see put in a Saw trap? I expect some interesting answers. Post them in the comment section. You think about that while getting Smacked Up!

Edge and Alberto Del Rio wrestled to a No Contest (**3/4)

This was a good way to start the show. It’s refreshing when you get a match and not a promo to at the beginning of a wrestling show. They got about 13 minutes to work here and it was a good TV match. The first part of the match ADR worked over Edge’s shoulder/arm after Edge missed a Spear in the corner. Things picked up after the commercial break. There are little things that happen in a match that sometimes go unnoticed but make the match more enjoyable. Like, when Edge hit the flapjack on ADR, he shook his arm to show he was still in pain. How many guys do that? Selling injuries is so simple yet so forgotten. Edge took control of the match and was getting ready to hit the Spear when The Nexus’ music hit and they ran to the ring and quickly got rid of ADR and Edge.

Nexus is not in full force as Wade Barrett is missing. David Otunga grabs the mic to say they’re here to dominate. The Big Show’s music hits and he heads to the ring. But he’s not coming alone as Rey Mysterio and Kane hit the ring with him. They quickly dispatch Nexus. Two things from this. #1. Why would Kane want to fight Nexus? They just helped him get rid of his most bitter rival and keep his World Heavyweight Championship. You’d think he wouldn’t be in a rush to go after them. #2. Where is Barrett? I think we’ll get the answer on RAW where Otunga took it upon himself to go to SD creating further dissension between him and Wade.

We come back from commercial and SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long comes out to make Nexus vs. Edge, ADR, Big Show, Kane and Rey in what he called the biggest 10 man tag in SmackDown history. Sure it is Teddy.

Dolph Ziggler beat JTG via Submission (3/4*)

Not much to say about this one other than I didn’t know JTG still had a job and apparently Michael Cole gets off on saying the word “cougar”. Dolph won in three minutes with the sleeper. When’s he wrestling Daniel Bryan again?

After the match the high school love triangle continues. Kaitlyn comes to the ring to celebrate Dolph’s win and an angry Vickie Guerrero storms to the ring and slaps the shit out of Kaitlyn.

We come back from commercial and Vickie storms in on Teddy and Hornswoggle’s bonding session to demand justice against the hussy stealing her man. Teddy makes Vickie vs. Kaitlyn for later tonight. Should be epic.

We cut to the back to see Nexus beating the hell out of Rey. That’s going to take him out of the match tonight. I’m surprised he was even at the arena with his ear infection.

We come back from another commercial to see Josh Mathews catching up with the dastardly men of Nexus. Josh wants to know why they took out Rey. Otunga says that Nexus isn’t all about Wade and John Cena and since Wade left for the UK early to visit friends they decided to show the world what they’re about. He says they took out Rey because they can.

MVP defeated Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes in a Triple Threat Match to become #1 Contender for the Intercontinental Championship (**1/4)

This match followed the WWE Triple Threat formula just like last week. This wasn’t as good as last week’s match because last week’s match featured better wrestlers. This still was a solid 13 minutes of wrestling. Cody controlled most of the match post-commercial but cost himself when he went to the top and Drew crotched him. The end sequence was fun when Drew had MVP set up for the Future Shock and Cody broke it up hitting the Beautiful Disaster on Drew. MVP then side stepped Cody sending him to the outside and then hit the Drive By on Drew to score the win. This was rather predictable since MVP is the face and Dolph is a heel. I would like to see Cody win the Intercontinental Championship. Despite being Dashing, I think he’s a good wrestler that’s only going to get better. Oh, and Cole hates MVP too now.

Vickie Guerrero pinned Kaitlyn (DUD)

Yup, Dudville. Population them. Kaitlyn kicked and Vickie screamed. Somewhere in there Cole called Kaitlyn a wench. Vickie won after taking down Kaitlyn and pinning her with her feet on the ropes. Where’s Trish Stratus? Ugh, what a mess.

We come back from commercial and Kaval and MVP are talking in the back and Kelly Kelly comes by to say she wants to congratulate MVP at the hotel later. Then Nexus attacks MVP and Kaval.

Tyler Reks beat Chris Masters (*)

Todd Grisham informed us that this was a rematch from Superstars last week. That’s where the rematch should have happened. Reks won with the Burning Hammer in three minutes. I actually like that move but he needs to work on it some more. I guess they’re going to push Reks but I need to see more from him.

Kane, Edge, The Big Show, Alberto Del Rio and Kofi Kingston defeated Nexus (David Otunga, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater, Michael McGillicutty and Husky Harris) (**3/4)

I usually enjoy these mega-sized tag team matches when they are given time. This one got about 19 minutes. It fell short of what I thought it would be but it was still good for the most part. ADR left the team before the commercial break without even getting tagged in. He left because Big Show knocked him off the apron accidently. Kofi replaced Rey in the match and he took the babyface beatdown for helping out. He got the hot tag to Kane who cleaned house only to Chokeslam Big Show because I guess he thought Show hit him from behind. Kane was getting ready to Chokeslam Otunga when Edge tagged himself in. Kane didn’t like that so Edge Speared him and then Speared Otunga for the win. I like that Otunga took the fall because it makes sense as far as the story goes. We’ll probably learn on Monday that Otunga took Nexus to SD without Wade’s permission and then Wade’s going to be pissed Otunga made them look weak by taking the fall in the match. If that happens then I give a gold star to WWE creative for thinking ahead. Something they don’t do on a regular basis.

The show ended with Edge starring at Kane as he retreated up the ramp.

The Diagnosis

I can really get used to reviewing this show. The wrestling wasn’t as good as last week but we still got three quality TV matches. Let’s never speak of Vickie vs. Kaitlyn again. My only gripe is that you’re two weeks away from a Big 4 PPV and you have your title match set yet there is no interaction between the combatants until the final two minutes of the show and it was minimal and did very little to build any interest in the match. Other than that another strong effort from the Blue Brand. The 11/5 WWE SmackDown gets a 7/10.

Star of the Night

This was requested last week and I figured I’d institute it. The winner this week is Edge. The guy pulled double duty this week wrestling in two matches lasting a total of 32 minutes. Edge wrestled on a quarter of the show in two **3/4 matches. The Rated R Superstar (on a PG show) is more than deserving of the first Star of the Night award.

If anyone else has any suggestions to make this column more enjoyable leave them in the comment section. I’ll take them into consideration. Asking me to leave this review is not a suitable suggestion.
